What Is Glutathione?

Glutathione is a sulfur-containing tripeptide made from glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. FDA’s substance record for Glutathione maps the ingredient to reduced L-glutathione, commonly abbreviated GSH. Reduced Glutathione is chemically distinct from Oxidized Glutathione (GSSG), S-acyl glutathione derivatives, and glutathione precursor systems.

The INCI does not establish a particular fermentation, synthetic, botanical, or other manufacturing route. Commercial materials may differ in assay, redox state, impurity profile, physical form, carrier system, and stability guidance.

Glutathione can support antioxidant and tone-focused concepts, but topical clinical evidence remains limited and material-specific.

Antioxidant Direction

Reduced glutathione is central to cellular redox chemistry and is widely recognized for antioxidant activity. This supports an antioxidant formulation story without proving sunscreen activity, pollution protection, or repair of oxidative damage in a finished cosmetic.

Brighter, More Even-Looking Tone

Clinical literature includes pigmentation-related results from topical glutathione systems. A 2025 systematic review found only five eligible topical trials, with different glutathione forms and formulas, so universal brightening efficacy should not be claimed.

Well-Aging Positioning

Some topical studies report wrinkle, hydration, or elasticity-related changes, but several tested Oxidized Glutathione, derivatives, precursor blends, or combination products. Use these findings as formulation context rather than direct evidence for neat GSH.

Confirm Reduced-GSH Basis

Review INCI, GSH assay, oxidized-glutathione limits when specified, source or manufacturing route, impurities, supplied form, storage, and batch COA. Do not compare GSH, GSSG, derivatives, or pre-formulated systems by addition percentage alone.

Control Oxidation in Water

FDA technical review material notes that reduced Glutathione can oxidize in aqueous solution. Validate pH, temperature, oxygen exposure, processing, headspace, other redox-active ingredients, and package protection with the actual formula.

Evaluate Delivery Strategy

Published delivery research describes native GSH as challenging to deliver across skin and explores microneedles, niosomes, and other carrier systems. Do not transfer performance from those systems to a conventional serum or cream.

Keep Glutathione Forms and Claims Separate

A 2% GSSG lotion trial and studies of acylated glutathione are not direct concentration guidance for reduced GSH. Avoid converting dermatology, oral, intravenous, or delivery-device evidence into universal cosmetic brightening, anti-aging, UV-protection, or treatment claims.
