What Is Squalane?

Squalane is a saturated hydrocarbon used in cosmetics primarily as an emollient and skin-conditioning ingredient. It is closely related to Squalene, but the two are not the same material: Squalene contains multiple double bonds, while Squalane is the saturated form and is more resistant to oxidation.

Commercial Squalane may be produced from different feedstocks and manufacturing routes. Do not assume that a material is olive-derived, sugarcane-derived, vegan, natural, or sustainable without documentation for the exact grade being purchased.

What to Confirm Before Sampling

Squalane is straightforward to recognize by INCI, but grade, source, sensory profile, and the surrounding oil system still matter commercially.

Confirm Source and Grade

Check supplier, feedstock or source documentation when relevant, manufacturing route, purity or composition, color, odor, storage, and quality specifications for the actual material.

Build the Sensory System as a Blend

Do not judge Squalane in isolation. Evaluate it with the full emollient phase because viscosity, polarity, plant oils, esters, silicones, waxes, and emulsifiers can change spread, cushion, greasiness, and dry-down.

Keep Stability Formula-Specific

Squalane is more oxidation-resistant than Squalene, but the complete formula may still contain oxidation-sensitive oils, fragrances, extracts, or actives. Review antioxidants, oxygen exposure, light, heat, headspace, closure, and storage as a system.

Avoid Automatic Finished-Product Claims

Do not convert emollient use into guaranteed barrier repair, acne suitability, non-comedogenicity, or clinical moisturization claims. Those statements require evidence appropriate to the finished product and intended market.
