Formula Route and Materials Set the Starting Point

The formula route is the development path selected for the project. It may involve an existing formula, a limited adjustment, a new custom formula, or review of a formula supplied by the buyer.

Each route can require different technical work. Cost may also change when the buyer specifies an exact supplier or grade, whether an ingredient must be supplied as a powder or liquid, the active concentration being requested, material availability, or limits on substitutions.

A larger quantity can spread some setup work across more units, but it does not guarantee a lower unit price. The effect depends on the batch structure, packaging suppliers, and agreed scope.

Packaging and Decoration Change More Than Component Price

Primary packaging directly holds or dispenses the formula, such as a bottle, jar, tube, pump, or cap. Secondary packaging includes items such as labels and outer cartons.

Package choice can affect component cost, supplier minimums, setup, filling feasibility, sealing, assembly, leakage control, transport fit, and timing. Printing, coating, foil, color matching, and custom finishes may add separate processes or minimum quantities.

A special component or custom mould may create one-time work, but not every project requires tooling. The package should be reviewed as a functional system, not only as a visual choice. Buyers can examine these dependencies through the packaging and label design process.

Per-Unit, One-Time, and Project-Level Costs

Manufacturing quotations may contain different types of cost:

Factory-gate manufacturing cost means the goods are made available at the factory before freight and destination costs. It is different from the total amount required to deliver the goods to the buyer.

Example: Similar Serum, Different Cost Structure

Hypothetical example only:

Project A uses an existing serum formula, one standard bottle and label, one SKU, standard filling, and factory-gate delivery.

Project B starts with a custom serum brief, specified active-material requirements, an airless package, a decorated carton, two sizes, selected testing and documentation, and a broader delivery scope.

In this example, the airless package may affect per-unit component cost, development or artwork preparation may create one-time work, and selected testing or delivery coordination may create project-level work.
